The Crowne Plaza is the largest
hotel in Redondo Beach.
In Spanish, Redondo means circular, round, or surrounding, and it is a proper noun to describe Redondo Beach because it is surrounded by the Palo Verdes Peninsula to the south and sea bluffs to the east and north, with the ocean and beach completing the circle; a sort of Lost Horizon town distant from the teaming mega-metropolis of Los Angeles. It was hard to believe that Redondo Beach is only seven miles south of the LAX airport, but still close to southern California theme parks, shopping, and the expressways.

What a great town, sort of Mayberry sleepy; a great town for relaxing and sleeping, and no other Redondo Beach hotel matches the Crowne Plaza Beach & Marina Hotel because the U-shaped resort provides every guest with a Crowne Sound sleeping CD.  No other hotel I have ever visited offers such a needed service.

The Sleep Advantage CD was developed by renowned sleep expert Michael Breus, Ph.D., of SoundSleep Solutions, and the audio track has everything you need to get a great night’s rest, including sleep tips and advice and sounds conducive to sleep.

Add in the Crowne Plaza’s comfortable pillow top beds and plush duvets with seven pillows and seven layers of bedding with luxurious linens, and get this, Quiet Zone floors, you are assured great dream time.  The Quiet Zone floor has no noisy housekeeping or maintenance activities between 9 p.m. and 10 a.m. Children and leisure groups are booked into other areas of the hotel, assuring a wonderful night on the mattress.

The guaranteed wake-up call eliminates anxiety about oversleeping.  The Crowne Plaza also includes sleep amenities such as eye masks, earplugs, and lavender aromatherapy sprays for your bed linens. The drapes have a clip to shut out unwanted extraneous light, but the room has a soft and soothing nightlight.  What a great idea!

Here are ten sleep tips from the Crpwne Sound snoozing CD:

1.  Relax before retiring. Listen to the CD, read, meditate, do light stretching exercises, or take a hot shower before spraying down the linens with lavender.

2. Watch the intake of caffeine in coffee, teas, and even sodas. Eat bread or carbs to reduce the caffeine’s affects.

3. Watch the intake of alcohol.  Alcohol can cause nightmares, sweats, and headaches. Drink lots of water before bedtime to counteract alcohol’s affects.

4.  Exercise at the right time.  Light exercise is okay but strenuous exercise leaves you over tired.

5.  Cut down on noise, light, and extreme temperature. Try the supplied earplugs, night light, eye mask, and drape clip. The best sleep temperature is between 68 and 72 degrees F.

6.  Eat right and sleep tight. Avoid eating a large meal before bedtime or going to bed hungry. Balance your eating. Eat foods that promote sleep, such as milk, tuna, halibut, pumpkin, artichokes, avocados, almonds, eggs, peaches, walnuts, apricots, oats, asparagus, potatoes, and bananas.

7. Understand jet lag. Before crossing time zones, wake up later or earlier to reset the body clock.  It usually takes a few days to catch up.

8. Remember the purpose of the bed. Avoid TV, eating, and emotional discussions while in bed.

9. No drinks after 8 p.m. Take your fluids earlier.

10. Nap smart. A 20 minute power nap early in the day is a great way to refresh yourself. But don’t over nap either.

About 85% of the AAA Four Diamond Redondo Crowne Plaza rooms have either an ocean view or marina view of King Harbor or Redondo Beach Marina. There are 339 guestrooms and eight suites at the hotel, and I certainly enjoyed the wide plasma TV and comfy couch in my Junior Suite.  All guest rooms contain a refrigerator, coffee maker, hair dryer, two line phones, iron and ironing board, personal safe, and a private balcony.

Because Redondo Beach is an L.A. bedroom community, you are close to cool things to do, such as a baseball game at Dodger Stadium. The Crowne Plaza has its own huge free shuttle bus to area shopping at the Del Amo Fashion Center and the South Bay Galleria, so self park in the covered garage, or valet it because Redondo Beach has everything you need close at hand, which makes strolling the town’s streets such a  pleasure.

The Redondo Beach Crowne Plaza can host functions for up to 1000 people in their various ballrooms and business salons.

The Executive Boardroom at 550 square feet of space offers privacy with a lounge and special food and beverage and secretarial services.

The hotel's largest ballroom is the Coral Ballroom with just over 7,500 square feet of space, complete with a 3,500 square foot foyer for pre event receptions. The Coral Ballroom accommodates 600 seated guests and breaks down into five conference rooms.

The smaller Seascape Ballroom has no foyer and is at just under 3,500 square feet, and it seats 250 banquet guests. 

The Mezzanine Room is at 1,900 square feet, and the Redondo Salon I is at 1,200 square feet, and the Peninsula, Pacific, and Redondo Rooms are each at 2,480 square feet.

The Harbor Terrace overlooks the ocean and the beautiful swimming pool with huge deck and tented cabana/gazebos, which often hosts cocktail meetings, receptions, or catered functions. The Harbor Terrace Room has 6,256 square feet of space. The pool deck also has a lighted tennis court and an outdoor hot tub.  The pool was certainly one of the most popular areas for guests, accessed with your magnetic room key to assure security. Guests also have free access to all of Gold Gym’s equipment right next door.

There is an expansive 1,500 gallon saltwater aquarium in the pre event area just off the lobby with couches on a raised platform.

Splash Bistro for well fed Med food.
The hotel has one main dining restaurant, with a separate outdoor entrance.  Splash is a Mediterranean Bistro serving breakfast buffets, or made-to-order omelets. A cool touch was the chef’s table set up right in the kitchen area.  Now that is fresh food service.  You can also watch the chefs through huge plate glass windows.  Splash also serves healthy lunch and dinner menus with bar service from the nearby Splash Bistro Lounge. The garden patio is particularly popular by residents and guests alike for the special Sunset Dinners.

The European Day Spa and Salon

The European Day Spa Salon offers special monthly packages such as the Stress-Partake. Get a Day at the Spa Gift Certificate or ask for special corporate and senior citizen rates or get a birthday discount with your ID. Throw your own spa party for friends and relatives for your special occasions, bridal showers, or corporate getaways.

Spa services include aromatherapy, massages, skin care guidance from trained technicians, and poolside lunches in the gazebo/cabanas. The spa has Jacuzzis, showers, saunas, lockers, steam rooms, and the cool two couple’s rooms where two therapists work out the kinks side by side on two massage tables.

Get a new look at the Designer Hair Studio with makeup artists that can include airbrushing.

Redondo Beach is renowned for its marinas and boating and sailing activities.

The King Harbor Marina offers boat slips, offices, yacht clubs, and a SportCenter Fitness center; call 310/376-6926. The fitness center features racquet ball courts, Fitlinxx equipment,  heated outdoor pool, yoga, tennis, basketball, golf driving range, a Pilates studio, a cardiovascular room,  steam and sauna rooms, Jacuzzi, and  massages. The International Boardwalk at Basin III offers shops and restaurants overlooking the fishing boats.

The Redondo Beach Pier offers shops, restaurants, diners, benches, tables for picnics.

The Redondo Fun Factory is next to the Fun Fish Market Restaurant on the Boardwalk, offering kiddie rides, a Tilt A Whirl, and a giant arcade with games. Open Monday thru Thursday from noon to 10 p.m., and from Friday noon to midnight, Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight, and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Seaside Lagoon is essentially a private beach that is gated with a shallow water lagoon for swimming, featuring slide and swings. Snack at the nearby Ruby’s Restaurant. Open seasonally. Home of the popular Lobster Festival. Small fee. Call 310/318-0682.

Shark Attack. See a real great white shark. Great souvenirs.

Strand Bike Path offers 27 miles of oceanfront walking, skating, and hiking, from Terrace Beach to Santa Monica . Marina Bike Rentals are across from the Best Western Sunrise Hotel next to the Cheesecake Factory. ID required. Bike from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Call 310/318-2453.

Riviera Village is one of the best-known shopping areas in Redondo Beach, located at the south end of town; it is a stunning street of shops, cafes, boutiques and galleries, such as the Village, Harmony Works  http://www.harmony-works.com noteworthy because it sells original items that one can't find anywhere else. Boat Rides

Gondola Amore (right) is a romantic cruise in King Harbor, with departures from Redondo Beach Marina. Reservation required. Call 310/376-6977.

Voyager is a classic smooth riding 65-foot passenger vessel that departs the Sports Fishing Pier hourly for a 40 minute coastal cruise that is fully narrated about the marine life and history of the area. Call 310/372-2111.

Ocean Racer is a high speed boat ride above the surf line. Located at the entrance of the pier below Kincaid’s. Call 310/374-3481.

S-44 Submarine. This is the S-UU, a WWII submarine replica that offers a look at the undersea life. Not a true sub, but a semi-submersible, with windows below the waterline. The company also rents pedal boats. Call 310/374-3481.  Boat rides are weekends and holidays from noon to dusk, season and weather permitting.

Marina Sailing offers a 100 vessel fleet in six locations that includes sailing, power boating, instructions, and yacht rentals. Call 310/318-2772.

Pacific Star Dive Boat is a luxury live aboard dive vessel serving the Channel Islands and Santa Monica Bay with dives on local wrecks off of Palo Verdes to Malibu.  The boat is custom built for divers with private staterooms, hot showers, and galley. Call for charter dates at 626/716-1796.

The Redondo Sport Fishing Pier is the place for deep sea fishing, with the half day boats named “City of Redondo” and "Redondo Special”. The ¾ day boat is called the “Seaspray”, and the Channel Islands boats are called “Highliner” and “Betty G”. Winter Whale Watching and Nature Cruises are offered from January through March by Redondo Sportfishing.  Tours go out twice daily in season from the sportsfishing pier. Reservations required. Call 310/372-2111.

In my circular, or should I say, Redondo world travels, I certainly hope to make it back to this beautiful seaside village.
