Set high on a cliff above the Atlantic Ocean stands the magnificent "CRANE", Barbados' oldest resort hotel.

The original hotel, built in the 1700s, was integrated into the expansion of 1887, which was also integrated into the expansion of 2001, and features quite possibly THE most spectacular views on the entire island, from the world-renowned pool, framed by a row of classic Greek columns overlooking Crane Beach, to the ensuite private pools, Resort Apartments, or Private Residences; magnificent views are de rigueur at The Crane.

Crane Beach, protected by a
natural coral reef, provides a
perfect location for swimming
and sunbathing.

Crane Beach, a mere 200 steps below the hotel, was named one of the "World's Top 10 Beaches" by "The Lifestyles of The Rich and Famous". Dramatic cliffs embrace the great expanse of pink sand and bright turquoise waters offering guests a compelling view in a private, intimate setting.

The name Crane Beach was coined two centuries ago when the formation of a protective coral reef allowed small ships to sail safely in and out of the natural harbor, leading to the development of a small commercial port. Adjacent to the resort, where Cliff House stands, was the crane used for raising and lowering cargo, thus, the name Crane Beach was adopted.

Today, after an ambitious refurbishment and further expansion, this unique hotel's commitment to history and local resources have paved the way for its move into the 21st century without spoiling its historic ambience.

The original 18 rooms served as a blueprint for the additional 52 luxury suites of coralstone walls, high vaulted ceilings, and wooden floors. Owner and Managing Director, Paul Doyle, felt it was extremely important to maintain the grace and elegance of the past by having furniture for the refurbished hotel custom-built by the highly skilled local craftspeople, modeled from antiques found on site.

Each suite showcases the "Old World" charm of the nineteenth century with exquisite antique furniture, Oriental carpets, objects d'art, and hand-carved, king-sized, mahogany four-poster beds, while providing such modern amenities as high-speed internet access, large screen televisions with cable, DVD/CD players and VCR's.

Private residences at the Crane were open to the public in 2001 with 34 completed to date and another 126 planned. With over forty acres of oceanfront land, Doyle has planned less than seven luxury residences per acre, on a half mile of ocean frontage, to allow for the privacy and seclusion that have been a hallmark of The Crane for 115 years. Complimenting privacy and seclusion is the luxury of space within, measuring 1,120 square feet in a ground floor one-bedroom, two bath suite, to 2,149-square-feet in the three-bedroom, four bath penthouse suites, with select suites offering up to 260-square-feet of uncovered patio space for private sunbathing.

Doyle acknowledged the preferences of his guests throughout the expansion process, "in the first new building, we put in private plunge pools and guests loved them. So in the second building we built larger pools," commented Doyle. Today guests in ground floor suites have the advantage of large outdoor terraces and private pools while guests on the higher floors have the incredibly breathtaking views from the romantically seductive pools located in turrets overlooking the cliff and the ocean far below. Some Private Residences feature pools up to 28 feet in length, many with a "infinity edge", providing breathtaking ocean views.

luxury abounds with the bath double sinks.

Each Private Residence also features large Bay windows with oiled cedar shutters, spa showers with multiple shower heads, Jacuzzi baths, double-door refrigerator with in-door icemaker, a dishwasher, washer and dryer, and blessedly, central air-conditioning through hidden ducts.

Once development is fully completed over the next five years, this first-class gated Private Residence Resort will include a full-service spa, lighted tennis courts, exercise stations, several swimming pools, nature trails and a choice of casual or gourmet dining; it will be one of the finest resorts anywhere in the Caribbean. — Feature by Kris King, Toronto Correspondent.
